Intellectual train control system

Intellectual train control system BORT is a trainborne control and safety system, specifically designed to provide the safe train movements on track in accordance with the movement authorities by continuously monitoring the train speed and signaling lights. 

BORT System is designed to be used at railroad sections equipped with:

  • wayside automatic train control devices ALSN / ALS-EN;
  • spot track sensors (balises) and a digital radio channel.

The system enables non-stop locomotive traffic at the boundaries of railroad sections equipped with various types of interval train traffic control systems.

System components

The Safe Computing Block (SCB) processes all information received from periphery devices and sensors, ensures the safe operation of the emergency braking electropneumatic valve, makes critical computations and operates peripheral devices.


Main Indication Block (MIB) of various designs displays all SCB processed information to the locomotive operator and enables the locomotive operator to interface with the system using the buttons located on the MIB's console.

Navigation Block (NB) receives signals from a satellite navigation antenna and processes navigation and real time data.

Network Switch (NS) arranges an Ethernet based network between the connected blocks and to power blocks supporting the PoE technology.

Intrface Matching Block (IMB) is designed to connect external digital equipment (e.g. digital radio channel modem, balise signal receiver, digital pressure sensors, external systems, etc.).

I/O Block (IOB) is designed to connect external analog equipment (e.g. locomotive control and diagnostics lines, analog pressure sensors, etc.).

Train speed/pressure/integrity control sensors, actuation devices.

Features and functions:

  • receiving and processing information about the showings of ground mounted signals via track channels ALSN / ALS-EN or distance to the relevant obstacle via a digital radio channel;
  • determining train traffic parameters (traffic direction, speed, rate of acceleration, etc.);
  • displaying or sending to the locomotive operator visual and audio signals about train traffic along the route, train movement parameters and system operation mode;
  • continuous displaying of a locomotive color light signal and parameters of allowable and target speed depending on train traffic situation;
  • continuous speed control and use of automatic brake action when actual speed exceeds allowable speed;
  • prevention of any unauthorized train traffic at the restrictive color light signal;
  • dead-man's vigilance device;
  • prevention of any unauthorized locomotive movement (rollback);
  • forced train stop in case of an unauthorized shutdown of BORT system;
  • recording of traffic parameters to identify any traffic safety irregularities and their causes;
  • monitoring of pressure in brake friction cylinders, brake conduit or brake valve reservoirs;
  • receiving and monitoring of compliance with, temporary speed limitations applicable to ahead running lines and stations transmitted via a digital radio channel and/or uploaded to a digital route map, including for places which are subject to track work.
